World’s Only Life-Size Bronze Mars Statue Now Viewable Up Close at Zeugma Mosaic Museum
Visitors to the Zeugma Mosaic Museum in Gaziantep can now experience one of the institution’s most remarkable masterpieces from a completely new perspective. A specially constructed viewing platform allows the public to approach the museum’s approximately 2,000-year-old bronze statue of Mars more closely than ever before.
The museum, established in 2011 across a 30,000-square-meter complex along the historic Silk Road, houses some of the most significant archaeological treasures in Türkiye. Among them, the life-size bronze representation of the Roman god Mars stands out not only for its scale but also for its rarity.
According to Museum Director Özgür Çomak, the sculpture is unparalleled worldwide.
“This is the only life-size bronze statue of Mars in existence. Its eyes are crafted from gold and silver. It is displayed on a column. Previously, visitors could only observe it from a distance. With the approximately 16-square-meter viewing platform we have built, they can now examine its magnificence up close.”

The statue, nearly two meters tall, symbolizes power and prosperity. Its finely inlaid gold and silver eyes are among its most striking features, reflecting the technical sophistication of Roman bronze craftsmanship. The closer vantage point now reveals subtleties in facial expression, surface modeling, and metalwork that were previously difficult to appreciate.

The newly installed platform can accommodate around 40 visitors at a time and has a total load capacity of 100 people, ensuring both safety and accessibility. Museum officials report that visitors have responded positively to the enhancement.

Selvi Ayhan, a visitor from Hatay who has toured the museum three times, noted that on previous visits the statue could only be seen from afar. The new arrangement, she said, offers a far more immersive encounter with the artwork.
While the Zeugma Mosaic Museum is internationally renowned for its extraordinary mosaics from the ancient city of Zeugma, the bronze Mars statue represents another dimension of Roman artistic achievement preserved in southeastern Türkiye. With the addition of the viewing platform, the sculpture’s craftsmanship and symbolic presence can now be appreciated with a clarity that matches its historical significance.
