Rare Mosaics Seized in Gaziantep: 3 Detained in Historic Artifact Operation
In Gaziantep’s Nurdağı district, Turkish gendarmerie officers conducted an operation that resulted in the seizure of two rare mosaics and the detention of three suspects.
According to authorities, E.Ç., M.B., and M.B. were under investigation for attempting to sell historically significant mosaics obtained through illegal channels. Acting on intelligence, gendarmerie officers stopped a vehicle belonging to E.Ç. and discovered two mosaics of varying sizes inside.

The recovered mosaics, considered culturally and historically valuable, were handed over to the Gaziantep Museum Directorate for safekeeping. The three suspects remain in custody while authorities continue their investigation.
Experts highlight that operations like this are crucial for protecting Türkiye’s cultural heritage. Illegal trafficking of artifacts such as mosaics not only hinders academic research but also threatens the tourism and preservation of the country’s rich history.

This latest seizure underscores Gaziantep authorities’ commitment to combating illicit trade in historical artifacts, with officials promising ongoing efforts to prevent similar crimes in the future.
