3,000-Year-Old Fish Lake in Ancient Erzen City Set to Open for Tourism in Batman, Türkiye
In Türkiye’s southeastern Batman province, the historically rich Fish Lake located in the ancient city of Erzen is set to welcome visitors as part of a new eco-cultural tourism initiative.
Erzen, an ancient settlement in Kozluk district with roots stretching back over three millennia, is gaining renewed attention thanks to recent restoration and development projects. Once a significant hub during the Middle Ages under the Dilmaçoğulları and Ayyubid dynasties, the site is now being revitalized with modern infrastructure that respects its historical and natural value.
Spearheaded by the Governorship of Batman, in collaboration with the Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism, the Special Provincial Administration, and the Kozluk District Governorship, the Fish Lake area has undergone major improvements. A 10-acre area has been landscaped into a picnic and recreational zone, complete with walking trails, gazebos, and green spaces.

As a precaution to protect the aquatic ecosystem, conservation work around the lake—which is fed by a natural spring—was carried out with great care to avoid harming the native fish population.
Located near the banks of the Garzan River, the lake is 95% ready for opening and is expected to be inaugurated in May 2025 as a new tourist destination.
A Historic Layer: The Legacy of Ancient Erzen
Erzen holds deep historical importance in southeastern Anatolia. As a former seat of regional powers and trade, it is home to archaeological remnants from various civilizations. Despite this rich heritage, the site remained relatively unknown—until now.
Kozluk District Governor Ekrem Güngör emphasized the cultural significance of the region:
“Kozluk has a documented history dating back around 10,000 years. It includes key landmarks like Hallan Çemi Mound, Malabadi Bridge, Mount Mereto, and the ancient city of Erzen. With this project, we aim to integrate Erzen and its Fish Lake into Batman’s growing tourism framework.”

Eco-Friendly Tourism Design
The new recreational setup is designed with sustainability in mind. The walking paths and picnic areas were carefully planned to ensure minimal impact on the environment. Special buffer zones were created to keep the fish habitat undisturbed while allowing visitors to enjoy the scenery.
A New Route on Batman’s Tourism Map
With its mix of natural charm and deep historical roots, Fish Lake is poised to become a new stop on Batman’s cultural tourism route—following the internationally known Hasankeyf.
Once open, the lake and surrounding site will offer both a tranquil escape into nature and a rich window into Anatolia’s layered past.
