8,000-Year-Old Fox-Clad Male Figurine Unearthed in Izmir, Türkiye
Archaeologists working at Ulucak Höyük in Kemalpaşa, İzmir, have uncovered an extraordinary Neolithic figurine: a 9-centimeter clay male figure wearing a fox pelt, dated to approximately 8,000 years ago. The discovery offers fresh insights into the symbolic and ritual life of early Anatolian communities.
Ritual and symbolic significance
Excavation Director Prof. Dr. Özlem Çevik highlighted that the figurine’s costume details set it apart from other finds at Ulucak Höyük, particularly the ceremonial headpiece-like element. According to experts, the choice of a fox pelt is likely intentional, as foxes were often associated with cunning and supernatural powers in early Anatolian societies. This suggests the figure may represent ritual roles, shamanic practices, or social identity within the Neolithic village.

Ulucak Höyük: Izmir’s earliest settlement
The ongoing excavations, initiated in 1995 and led by Prof. Dr. Çevik since 2009, have revealed that Ulucak Höyük was one of the first farming communities in the region. With a history stretching back 8,850 years, the site provides critical evidence on early agricultural practices, domestication of animals, pottery production, and ritual activities in Western Anatolia.
A new perspective on Neolithic Anatolia
While previous discoveries at Ulucak Höyük predominantly included female figurines, this male representation adds a new dimension to understanding gender roles and ritual practices in Neolithic villages. The fox pelt detail, in particular, opens new avenues for research into symbolic expression and religious beliefs in early Anatolian societies.
