Ancient Treasures of Ainos Unearthed in Northwestern Türkiye: Now on Display in Edirne Museum
The Edirne Archaeology and Ethnography Museum, located in the historic region of Thrace in northwestern Türkiye, invites visitors on a fascinating journey through time with its remarkable collection of artifacts unearthed from the ancient city of Ainos (modern-day Enez).
One of Thrace’s Oldest Museums, Rich in Heritage
According to Kemal Soytürk, Director of Edirne’s Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism, the museum is among the earliest archaeological institutions in the region.
“Our museum serves as a bridge between the past and the future,” Soytürk stated. “With artifacts unearthed from one of Thrace’s oldest settlements—Ainos—it has become one of the most visited museums in the region. Last year alone, we welcomed around 80,000 visitors.”

Enez: A Landscape Steeped in History
The ancient city of Ainos, today known as Enez, is a historically rich area featuring 51 archaeological sites and 44 registered cultural assets. Notable landmarks include Enez Castle, Has Yunus Bey Mausoleum, and the ruins of the Basilica of the King’s Daughter.
“Visitors should not miss the unique artifacts from Enez,” Soytürk emphasized. “Among the highlights are a rare Aeolic column capital, grave steles, hydriae, amphorae, and a miniature Nike statue. Our collection also features figurines of pregnant women, theatrical masks, sarcophagi in the courtyard, and various other column capitals.”

Excavations Led by Academic Expertise
Archaeological excavations in Enez began in 1971, under the supervision of the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Today, the project is led by Dr. Gülnur Kurap from Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University. Excavations typically start in the summer and continue through December.
More than 30,000 artifacts are currently housed in the Edirne museum, with nearly half originating from the Enez excavations.
A Museum for All Ages
Artifacts in the museum are displayed in chronological order, with several thematic exhibits as well. From ancient jewelry and household items to children’s toys from antiquity, the museum offers an engaging experience for visitors of all ages.

A Cultural Gateway to Ancient Thrace
For archaeology enthusiasts and culture seekers, the Edirne Archaeology and Ethnography Museum offers a rare opportunity to explore the deep historical roots of Ancient Ainos. With its growing collection and rich exhibition strategy, the museum stands as a gateway to understanding the ancient civilizations of the Thrace region.
