The Side Museum, where Side Inscriptions are Exhibited, was Reopened to Visitors
The museum, which features artifacts from the Late Bronze Age, Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine periods, has recently reopened to visitors following extensive restoration work, particularly showcasing Side inscriptions for the first time.
Located in the ancient city of Side in the Manavgat district of Antalya, the Side Museum, converted from an ancient bathhouse dating back to the 2nd century AD, has been welcoming art enthusiasts since 1962. The museum boasts a rich collection of 3,309 archaeological artifacts and 9,484 coins. Among these items are statues, sarcophagi, inscriptions, reliefs, busts, jewelry, and various architectural fragments.

Prof. Dr. Feriştah Alanyalı, the Head of the Side Ancient City Excavation and a faculty member in the Department of Archaeology at Anadolu University, stated that the finds in the region date back from the 8th century BC to the 13th century AD. Alanyalı emphasized that the museum’s collection demonstrates the region’s significance as a host to important settlements since the Hittite period.
The museum has become even richer, especially since 2014, due to increased excavation activities. Alanyalı noted, “The Side Museum has a broad collection not only of finds from Side but also from surrounding areas. Therefore, there was a need for renewal in the museum, and a new exhibition project was carried out with the support of the ministry.”

The renovated museum has received great acclaim from visitors. The Side Museum is particularly notable for its monumental works reflecting Side’s sculptural art. Inside the museum, statues from the Imperial Hall east of the gymnasium, statues found in the southern stoa of the gymnasium, and artifacts from the Monumental Fountain are on display.
Recently uncovered small finds from excavations are also being exhibited in the museum. Alanyalı remarked, “Some artifacts are being displayed for the first time. Additionally, Side inscriptions are now being showcased together for the first time. The unique script and language used in ancient times in Side, along with inscriptions from the new Luwian language group, are being exhibited collectively. This is quite significant for the region’s history.”

The Side Museum continues to be an important destination for both domestic and international tourists.
